Overview

If your club has yet to register the payment provider account, please see the following related article on registering the account.

Once your club has registered a payment provider account via the club control panel, the payment provider, Stripe or GoCardless, will likely require some documentation to verify your organisation, charity or limited company.

Existing payment provider accounts may also be required to provide documentation for the payment provider to verify due to changes to financial conduct regulations or discrepancies with the account.

It is important that the club responds quickly to requirements from the payment provider, Stripe and/or GoCardless, to ensure the club can continue to collect payments from members and receive payouts from the payment provider.

If the club fails to provide the documentation required, this can lead to restrictions placed on the payment provider account preventing payouts made to the club and even preventing the collection of payments from members.

Below in this article, we have provided information on the best ways your club can provide the documentation required to verify the payment provider account, and ensure the club is able to collect payments online from members.

Verify the club's Stripe payment provider account

In recent weeks, Stripe has increased the level of verification required from all customers, including existing customers. This is to ensure compliance with the UK’s strict banking regulations.

This has meant a number of clubs have had ‘restrictions’ applied to their Stripe account due to requirements not being met.
The club can remove these restrictions easily by providing Stripe with the verification documents which have been requested.

To check your club’s verification status and upload your necessary documentation, you will need access to the club’s Stripe account dashboard.

What documents could the payment provider require?

Stripe may ask your club to provide documentation to verify:

  • Your identity (the identity of the person who created the Stripe account)
  • Your club/business
  • The information about owners or directors listed when creating the account

How could restrictions impact the club?

The restrictions that Stripe might apply will vary per club/account. Stripe may hold a percentage of the money your club has collected until the verification has been completed, but may also prevent new payments being collected from members too.

Once the documentation has been verified by Stripe, the money will be released to the bank account attached to the Stripe account.

What do I do if I cannot access the club’s Stripe account?

If you have access to the email address associated with your Stripe account you can reset your password on the Stripe login page.

If the person who created the Stripe account has left the club, you will need to contact Stripe directly and they may be able to help you change the email address associated with the account.

Verify the club's GoCardless payment provider account

GoCardless is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. This means there are strict compliance requirements which need to be met for the safety of the club and its members, and the payment provider.

Once the club has registered the payment provider account, GoCardless may require the club to provide additional information to verify the account.

This may also be requested from time-to-time of existing accounts too.

What documents could the payment provider require?

GoCardless may ask your club to provide documentation to verify:

  • Business type and industry
  • Your personal details (such as address and birth date)
  • Director details (such as address and birth date)
  • Ultimate Beneficial owners (UBOs)
  • Business contact details
  • Bank account details

How could restrictions impact the club?

If the club is required to provide further documentation to verify the account, payouts to the club may be stopped until the verification has been completed.
